Last Songs

When I ministered in a nursing home in Auburn, WA for twenty years, I was blessed a number of times by residents who had gifts that only they and God knew about in that home. One lady who had dementia was crying in a hallway so I stopped and asked her what troubled her. She said she had wanted to play the piano while they were having lunch in the dining room. I told her we were setting up to have music and a gospel service. Not knowing what she might play – or if she could play, I said, “Come on in and play while we are setting up.” She immediately began to play gospel songs like a concert pianist! She played two songs and then I asked her if she knew some more songs. She played one more and then became confused and left the room. I learned from a nurse the next week that she had passed away.

I had another experience with a man who was in the memory care unit. A nurse came to me and said, “I think Bob would like to come to your services”. We walked to where he was and she told him about the service. No response from him, so I said to him, “We are going to sing about Jesus.” His face lit up and he began to follow me to the dining room. The pianist was playing Gospel songs. He went to the piano and began to sing along in a trained tenor voice. A few weeks later I learned of his passing. He loved Jesus and Jesus took him to be with Him. ~ Stanley M., WA
